Ballantyne Chamber Orchestra
What is a Chamber Orchestra?
A chamber orchestra is an ensemble of approximately 15 to 28 musicians. It is smaller than most symphony orchestra’s that can grow to over 100 players but larger than a chamber ensemble such as brass quintet or string quartet. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the modern day size of a symphony orchestra began to evolve. Thus, most arrangements of the 17th and 18th century, Baroque and Classical periods, were written for a smaller orchestra. Because of it’s intimate size, more attention is paid to detail requiring dedicated professional musicians that can create a synergy that translates to a more concentrated and vibrant sound. Audience members will no doubt enjoy a more personal experience.
Mission
The mission of the Ballantyne Chamber Orchestra is to develop and enhance the quality of cultural life in Ballantyne and south Charlotte through the presentation of high quality musical performances.
History
The concept to form a chamber orchestra evolved early in 2009 by the orchestra’s managing director, Josh Diaz a south Charlotte resident and Trombonist, who saw a need for artistic development in and around the Ballantyne area. His intuition was spurred on by musicians and community members alike who recognized the same need. Joined later that spring by Jamie Hood, the orchestra’s Conductor and Musical Director, they set out to plan and develop the ensemble. They envisioned an ensemble comprised of professional musicians from the Ballantyne and south Charlotte area that would delight audiences and perform at the highest levels. The Ballantyne Chamber Orchestra held its’ first performance November 28th 2009 with a Holiday Concert accompanied by the Renaissance Singer of Charlotte performing Vivaldi’s Gloria and other great holiday arrangements.
